CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

The 2009 year did not start the way we intended but through no fault of our own.  The news from the Chapman family that the annual “Art in the Sand” event would be cancelled due to a major sponsor withdrawing funding meant that one of our biggest fund-raisings to start the year had evaporated.  This cancellation left many people very upset and disillusioned but we are assured that the event will go ahead next year.

Following this we then set about to explore other possibilities for fund raisings for NHW and it did not take long to find them.  Dan Murphy’s allowed us to conduct sausage sizzles on a fortnightly basis at the rear of their premises commencing 27th June 2009.  Unfortunately we had to stop these as it was deemed inappropriate to have NHW associated with the sale of liquor but we still managed to make some money before making the decision to stop.

With the cancellation of Dan Murphy’s we turned a negative into a positive by taking this time to sell our faithful old bus and commence construction of a purpose built trailer in replacement.

Our next event was a sausage sizzle at the Blue light disco at the old Halls Head yacht club in July helping to feed the children attending during their school holiday break.

Perhaps our biggest ever achievement was the Little Nippers Maarwit Festival held in October.  We had a massive day selling 100 burgers, 1000 sausages and 600 cool drinks. Needless to say there were some very tired volunteers at the end of this day.  And with our trailer still not complete we had to enlist the help of Tru Blu Hire who kindly donated one to us for 3 days.  They were gratefully thanked and sent a Certificate of Appreciation.

Following this we participated in the 2009 Peel Region Seniors Expo & Gopher Active Games holding a sausage sizzle on the last Friday & Saturday of October.

Not as busy as the previous event but still added to our bank account, which is now in a healthy position.

The annual Xmas luncheon tirelessly organised by Helen Bowell is to be held on Tuesday 24th November with 51 people invited to attend.

Lastly we have the Arrive Alive Xmas Campaign and in conjunction with the City of Mandurah this will be held on the eastern foreshore on the 27th November 2009. Catering for 250 people. The City of Mandurah is sponsoring the event so it is hoped that NHW can finish off the year with another good event.

I would like to thank sincerely all the people who have volunteered their help over the past 12 months and of course Amanda Ahearn who has worked tirelessly throughout the year.  There are too many to mention individually but I will endeavour to thank them all personally. Thanks to YOU NHW is alive and well and we are now poised to make 2010 an even better year.
